Natural History Museum - London
The Natural History Museum is a fantastic free museum for all the family.
There are explorer backpacks for under 7s which are free but you will need to leave a security deposit.
Each backpack comes with an explorer hat and binoculars and is filled with drawing materials and activities, covering a wealth of topics to fascinate young children, from birds and primates to oceans and monsters.
There are always different events going so it is worth checking what’s on calendar too.
Note on museum website:
Please be aware that some Museum areas can seem dark or scary to young children including the T-rex animatronic.
Bags and pushchairs.
These can be left in the cloakroom. Please don’t take pushchairs on the escalator. The Exhibition Road entrance is pushchair-friendly. See our Access guide.
There are unisex baby care facilities around the Museum. We don’t sell tissues, but they are available from our restaurants, cafés and toilets.
Food and drink
Children are welcome at all restaurants and cafés, where you can warm bottles and use highchairs. Foods containing nuts and dairy products are labelled. If in doubt, pleasecheck with a member of staff. There is always a vegetarian option.
Picnic on the front lawns and in our indoor Picnic Area, both have drinking fountains. You’re welcome to bring your own food, it’s especially advisable if you have allergies, but please don’t eat in the galleries.

We only had time for a short visit but our toddler wooed and coooed at the big mammals, especially the elephants as they were so close. Great place to lose some energy but would advise not to visit on a Sunday with tiny tots for obvious reasons! The backpacks are a great idea we saw lots of young children using them and looking very thrilled - our chap was only 18 months and so a little too young to appreciate properly but fun day all the same.
